The most reliable fossil-fired units in Canada use FPS products and controls.

Fossil Power Systems (FPS) is once again well represented on the CEA 2003 Generating Equipment Status Report.

This report which was issued by the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) in November 2004, lists the top ten fossil fuel powered units rated by ICbF and OF. ICbF is Incapability Factor - measurement of time that unit is not available to run. OF is Operating Factor - percentage of year that unit is operating.

The two most reliable units in Canada both belong to Nova Scotia Power, and are both equipped with Fossil control systems, ignitors and flame scanners. In fact, eight of the top ten units in Canada use many FPS products.

The CEA report also dispels the long held industry myth that main flame scanners increase the number of burner trips and reduce unit availability. Of the top ten units on the ICbF list, seven are equipped with FPS main flame scanners and the remaining three do not use main flame scanners.

Therefore by correctly selecting, installing and commissioning flame scanners on coal-, oil-, or gas-fired units, the unit safety can be increased without any decrease in availability or performance.
