FPS controlled Power Plants continue to be the most reliable in Canada.

Fossil Power Systems (FPS) is once again well represented on the CEA 2004 Generating Equipment Status Report.

This report which was issued by the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) in April 2006, lists the top ten fossil fuel powered units (for the year 2004) rated by ICbF and OF. ICbF is Incapability Factor - measurement of time that unit is not available to run. OF is Operating Factor - percentage of year that unit is operating.

In 2004, eight of the top ten performing units in Canada utilize Fossil designed controls and/or products.

The most reliable unit in Canada this year was Nova Scotia Power’s Trenton Unit 6. This unit has the distinction of having the first video based burner management system (BMS) in Canada, which was designed and installed by FPS in 1989. This unit is still operating with the original FPS supplied system/video, and remains near the top in reliability year after year, achieving number one in Canada in 2004.

Nova Scotia Power’s Point Tupper Unit 2 was ranked number four in 2004 (first in 2003). This unit has the first PLC–based BMS in Canada which was installed by FPS in 1985 and upgraded with the FPS video interface in 1997. This system established the design template from which the FPS BMS product evolved. The FPS BMS systems employ design concepts that ensure safety, are intuitively operator friendly and maximize plant production. System power distribution, I/O partitioning, fuel partition, critical input supervision and fault tolerant software all contribute to the high performance of the FPS BMS and DCS products.

Three of the four units in operation at Nova Scotia Power’s Lingan GS also made it into the top ten this year. All of these units have FPS designed distributed control systems (DCS) in place, and are continually ranked near the top in Canada.

The list below shows the FPS units which were ranked in the top ten for 2004.
